Green Party MPs and members voted by a large majority in favour of starting talks to form a ‘traffic coalition’ government with the SPD and the FDP, at a party conference in Berlin on Sunday.

Most of the speakers, who were each given three minutes to speak, spoke in favour of the coalition in front of an audience of about a hundred people.

“Please agree to this proposal to enter into coalition negotiations, and together, hopefully in the coming weeks, let’s not only get a possible traffic light government on track, but renew this country,” leader Annalena Baerbock told party members.

Of 70 delegates, there were two votes against the coalition and one abstention.

The SPD had already voted unanimously on Friday in favour of starting coalition negotiations with the Greens and the FDP. Next Monday, the FDP leadership is set to decide on forming a ‘traffic light’ federal government.
