Hundreds of protesters rallied for peace in Afghanistan in Berlin on Saturday, as the Taliban strengthened its control over large parts of the country.

Demonstrators marched to the Brandenburg Gate urging governments around the world to contribute to ending the conflict in Afghanistan.

The protest was held shortly before news broke of the Taliban having captured the key northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which as the country’s fourth-largest city was regarded as a major stronghold of the government.

The recent Taliban offensive has been triggered by the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal from the country.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Shirzad, protester (German): “This is about the situation in Afghanistan which is very chaotic and in the last weeks Taliban has taken over a big part of the country, and now Afghans around the world are taking to the streets and protest against it.”

SOT, Shirzad, protester (German): “What’s happening is that Afghanistan is in fact at a proxy war, which means it’s a war of neighbouring countries, mainly Pakistan, which leads a proxy war. That’s why banners say ‘Stop proxy war’, because the proxy war is happening in Afghanistan. It’s not a civil war between Afghans, but a proxy war by neighbouring countries within Afghanistan.”
