Germany: Lines form at IKEA car park as Berlin offers COVID jabs without registration

Berliners queued in cars and on foot in the parking of the Lichtenberg Ikea on Saturday, as they sought to get a vaccination against Coronavirus on the spot without a pre-registration.

Footage shows the first vaccine given at the location, which began operations for the first time on Saturday, as well as several others driving up to receive their vaccines. Others can be seen arriving and waiting on foot.

The Berlin district mayor Michael Grunst was on location and explained how and why they came up with the concept.

“Above all we want to bring the vaccine to the people. And so we are looking at how we can do it, and we had a very successful campaign in Hohenshonhausen, and so together with our team we discussed what else is possible, and so we got the idea from the USA that one could simply offer a drive in, but we worked on that so that it wasn’t just a drive in but also that people could walk in or come by bicycle,” he said.

“I think it is necessary because too many people slip through the system, who do not come to a vaccination centre or general practitioners, and this is the task of the public health authorities, but be active here, to make offers on the spot, for example for those who do not have health insurance, so that people can get a vaccine simply, without appointment, with a low threshold, and on the spot,” he added.

Berliners could receive either Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine or the Moderna’s at the location, where reports say they aim to provide up to 2000 vaccinations per day. ​

SOT, Dilek Kalayci, Berlin State Minister for Health, Care, and Equality (German): “Honestly I am very happy as the Health Senator that here, just like in Neukolln, the demand is so high, which means that we in fact have hit the nerve of Berliners, and that they say ‘we do not want to register, we do not want to book something online’ but rather that in this new phase of the vaccination management one can get vaccinated without registering and simply by coming by. This is accepted, and it pleases me a lot, but I must also say to that that there is one disadvantage, which is that one must wait, which is very clear.”
