A lone gunman killed one person and injured three others in an attack on a lecture hall at Heidelberg University on Monday. The assailant, who is believed to be a student, later shot himself.

A large deployment of police could be seen guarding the cordoned-off campus in Neuenheimer Feld, a Heidelberg district where parts of the university’s hospital and natural science faculties are located. The assailant is thought to have entered the area, now heavily guarded by police, carrying several rifles in their backpack, German newspaper Bild reported.

The attacker is believed to have opened fire while a lecture was in process, according to local reports, before fleeing the scene and turning the gun on himself. One of the victims was reportedly shot in the head and later succumbed to their wounds.

As of yet, the police have not released any information on the victim or the perpetrator’s identities or the reason for the attack. However, German newspaper Der Spiegel said the gunman is believed to be 18-years-old and was following the course in the lecture hall he targeted.

Mannheim police will hold a press conference on the attack at 19:00 CET.
