The federal state of Saxony-Anhalt returned a total of 13 artefacts to the ambassadors of Mexico and Guatemala, in Berlin on Friday.

The archaeological objects were in possession of a collector in the small town of Kloetze, who bought them years ago in a flea market in Leipzig without knowing their origin. They date from around AD 250 to 850 and were probably stolen by tomb raiders. Eleven of them originate from Guatemala.

Mexican ambassador expressed that “these pieces have a very painful history for indigenous populations since they were afflicted by destruction, death and looting.”

Guatemalan ambassador Jorge Lemcke went on to add: “For those who were in property of these artefacts and decided to return them voluntarily deserve special appreciation. This gives us hope that similar other owners of private collections can follow this path.”

The handover of the artefacts was originally scheduled for May 2021, but the exchange had to be postponed for “diplomatic reasons.”
