Germany: Measures against money laundering to be "strengthened" following raids in ministries - spox

A spokesman for the Finance Ministry Dennis Kolberg attended the Federal Government press conference in Berlin on Friday to comment on the recent police raids in connection with a multi-million money laundry case involving the ministries of Justice and Finance.
“The measure as expressed in the decision of the district court was not directed against employees of the ministries. It was about the identification of employees of the central office and to obtain information about the so-called risk-based approach of the central office”, Kolberg stated.
The spokesperson added that the measures “to have an effective fight against money laundering” in Europe and Germany “will be strengthened”.
On Thursday police searched the German ministries of justice and finance as part of a probe open since February 2020 to investigate the Cologne-based Central Office for Investigation of Financial Transactions (FIU), after the agency allegedly failed to report on possible money laundering from banks to the judiciary and police.
Olaf Scholz, the head of the finance ministry and the SPD candidate to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel, said in a statement he “fully supports the authorities” in the investigation.

The goal of yesterday’s measures at the federal ministries is an expanded facts clarification according to the decision of the district court in Osnabrueck from April 10th 2021.’‘
