German Chancellor Angela Merkel planted a linden tree and laid the foundation stone for a new day-care centre on Friday in Templin, during a visit to the town where she grew up.
“If a city produces happy children, then we can also look forward to the next jubilees of this city with confidence,” chancellor Angela Merkel stated.
Merkel visited Templin to celebrate the city’s 750th anniversary completed last year.
Together with the mayor of Templin Detlef Tabbert (Linke), Merkel shovelled soil onto the freshly planted young tree and then gave a speech in which she acknowledged her ‘roots’ in Templin.
The Chancellor had been an honorary citizen of Templin since 2019. Born in Hamburg, she had spent her childhood and youth in the Uckermark from 1957 to 1973, where her father was a pastor in Templin.
SOT, Detlef Tabbert, Mayor of Templin (German): “The Tilia trees are the premium trees in the townscape of Templin and most of our beautiful 15 districts. After all, there are 7,014 of them and today the 7015th is added.”
SOT, Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor (German): “As Mr Tabbert has just said, I wanted to plant a tree last year for the 750th anniversary, but that was not possible and the pandemic not only prevented this possibility from coming true, but also many others where we would have liked to be together. But 750 years plus one is still valid and I am happy that we can finally celebrate it.”
SOT, Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor (German): “I would like to thank everyone who has helped to contain the pandemic here in Templin and to overcome it step by step, and it will not surprise you when I say that we can only overcome it if we get vaccinated. So if there are still people in Templin who have not yet been vaccinated, I think we can find an opportunity to do so.”
SOT, Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor (German): “I grew up here from 1957 until I graduated from high school, so I know what I am talking about, but I want to remind you once again that despite all the state paternalism and lack of freedom that we had, I have many good memories of my childhood here in Templin and, of course, especially - that is in the nature of things - of the Waldhof, and it will always be like that. This is where I come from, this is where my roots are and this is where they will always be.”
SOT, Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor (German): “Children are especially in the focus on this day, because the postponement of the anniversary celebration and the planting of the lime tree had the advantage or the pleasant side effect that we can lay the foundation stone for the new building of a day care centre for children right after the tree planting today. I was very pleased to see that the Hyparschale itself has already been renovated and have already enquired about what can take place inside. As an event venue and gastronomic facility right next to it with the headquarters for the nature park administration and next to it a day care centre for children, a wonderful combination.”
SOT, Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor (German): “During my political work, I have been able to travel and get to know many countries in the world, but the fact that I can be here with you today as an honorary citizen of my hometown Templin, which is after all over 750 years old, fills me with pride and also with very special joy. Therefore, I naturally wish that the building project will make rapid progress and that the children who will one day attend the day care centre will be able to develop strong roots of a carefree childhood, and if a city produces happy children, then we can also look forward to the next jubilees of this city with confidence.”
