German Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked Jordan’s King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein for his commitment regarding the future of Palestinians at a joint press statement in Berlin on Wednesday.
“I would like to thank you for the work that Jordan is doing with a view to the future of the Palestinians,” said Merkel at a meeting with Abdullah.
“As before - I also said this recently during my visit to Israel - we do not want to give up the idea of a two-state solution but rather keep it. We believe that Israel’s security is best guaranteed when there is also a state for the Palestinians to live in,” she added, commenting on the king’s role as administrator for the Holy Places in Jerusalem as an ‘important and special task.’
King Abdullah used the meeting with the press to pay tribute to the outgoing German Chancellor by outpointing her ‘dedication, honesty and passion’ regarding the countries’ collaboration.
“You have always been the voice of reason and a shining example of human dignity,” King Abdullah told Merkel.
During a joint working lunch discussion after the presser, the focus was bilateral and regional issues, with the Middle East peace process as its centre.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “The bilateral relations between us have become very close and friendly over the years. We exchanged views in many discussions, and I can say that we not only spoke, but we also stepped up our security cooperation. I would like to thank Jordan very much for this; Because of its geographical location, Jordan is a country that is exposed to having to deal with security issues, and I have learned a lot from His Majesty over the course of my years.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*
