German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for talks in Berlin on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference, Merkel stated: “We will discuss current issues related to NATO’s strategic concept and, of course, the relationship between EU defence policy and NATO, our task in NATO, in order to make it clear that there are no contradictions, but rather additions. Germany is of course one of the NATO members who know how valuable this transatlantic alliance is to us.”

Stoltenberg highlighted Germany’s important role and responsibility to commit a partnership between Europe and North America. “NATO needs a strong Germany, both politically and military.
That means also a Bundeswehr that has the capabilities to keep our countries safe. We have lots to discuss today, you mentioned some of the key issues. The situation at the Border between Poland and Belarus is deeply concerning. The use of vulnerable people as means to put pressure on other countries is cynical and inhumane,” stated Stoltenberg. The pair will also discuss the situation at the Belarusian border, as well as Russia and China.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “We will discuss current issues related to NATO’s strategic concept and, of course, the relationship between EU defence policy and NATO, our task in NATO, in order to make it clear that there are no contradictions, but rather additions. Germany is of course one of the NATO members who know how valuable this transatlantic alliance is to us.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “We are in the process of a government transition. Nonetheless, we also want to solve the current problems. There are worrying developments both with regard to Russia and Ukraine as well as with what is happening on the Belarusian border with Poland, Latvia and Lithuania. Of course, there is also need for discussion. We can tell each other about our initiatives.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “Personally, I have always advocated for a dialogue between NATO and Russia as well. Unfortunately, it has cooled off at the moment. I know that Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg always saw it that way. We have great contradictions, but it is always better to talk to each other than not to talk. In this respect, that will certainly also be an issue.”

SOT, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General: “NATO needs a strong Germany, both politically and military. That means also a Bundeswehr that has the capabilities to keep our countries safe. We have lots to discuss today, you mentioned some of the key issues. The situation at the Border between Poland and Belarus is deeply concerning. The use of vulnerable people as means to put pressure on other countries is cynical and inhumane.”

SOT, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General: “We also see a large and unusual concentration of Russian forces close to Ukraine’s borders. It is urgent that Russia shows transparency about its military buildup and deescalate and reduce tensions. NATO is monitoring the situation closely and we continue to provide political and practical support to Ukraine.”

SOT, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General: “We also see a [inaudible] behaviour by China. We see sophisticated cyber-attacks, persistent of terrorist threats the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the security implications of climate change. These challenges are very different but have one thing in common. The best way to tackle them is to stand united- North America and Europe - together in NATO in strategic solidarity.”
