Some 6,500 protesters marched in Dusseldorf on Saturday, to decry COVID restrictions and mandatory vaccination.

The demonstrators marched through the centre of the city carrying posters and signs denouncing the federal government’s COVID-19 restrictions and the possibility of vaccination becoming compulsory in the country.

In his New Year’s address on Friday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz pleaded with the public to take restrictions seriously as the country battles the more transmissible Omicron variant and a record-breaking number of infections.

One of the groups involved in the organisation of the protest, APO Dusseldorf stated on Twitter they intended to hold weekly demonstrations against the measures.

Germany has 71.2 percent of its population fully vaccinated, the lowest rate in western Europe after Switzerland and the UK.
