Berliners were seen queueing outside one of the German capital’s vaccination centres on Saturday, where it was announced the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine would begin to be rationed due to a temporary lack of supply.

“I am very disappointed because I made an appointment with BioNTech and then they said I’d be vaccinated with Moderna,” said local resident Rudiger.

According to reports, the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine would for the time people only be given to those under 30 and pregnant women until supplies were restocked, meaning that many who had booked appointments for BioNTech were offered Moderna instead.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Rudiger, local resident (German): “I am very disappointed because I made an appointment with BioNTech and then they said I’d be vaccinated with Moderna. But yeah, if the health minister announces that there is only Moderna now , that’s a bit difficult.”

SOT, Rudiger, local resident (German): “So then I asked the doctor what is the difference and so on, and so the foundation is the same and I thought I’d rather not wait until January or February until more are delivered, one doesn’t know how long it would take so I just wanted to have this done and behind me.”

SOT, Silke, local resident (German): “I think its not bad at all because there is enough Moderna and Moderna is even the better vaccine.”

SOT, Silke, local resident (German): “I don’t want to advise any panic, but I hope of course that the vaccine is good for that [omicron variant] as well.”

SOT, Tom, Local resident: “Maybe this next vaccination can provide people with different antigens, which might enhance the total vaccination efficiency, so I think it’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it certainly would be better if people were more informed before they got here and take the vaccine.”

SOT, Tom, Local resident: “I think it’s that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are quite interchangeable, so it wouldn’t affect me as much as the other people if they think they are not getting the vaccine that they signed up for.”

SOT, Tom, Local resident: “COVID-19 is 19 because they discovered it in 2019 and now it’s 2021 and we are proceeding into 2022, so its been dragging on for three years, and now we have this new variant from South Africa which has 32 more mutations in the spike proteins, so I think this coronavirus is no where near to be complete, so I’m expecting a couple more years in the future for things to be stabilised a little bit more.”
