Riot police used water cannons to disperse Antifa representatives and supporters holding a demonstration in support of left-wing attack suspect Lina E. and against decriminalisation of their movement in Leipzig on Saturday.

The rally turned violent as protesters lit up fires, threw rocks and firecrackers towards officers, and formed barricades blocking several roads.

Officers were seen taking a few protesters into custody.

Lina E. and her co-defendants are accused of having carried out violent attacks on right-wing extremists in Saxony and Thuringia, with Lina alleged to be the head of the militant left-wing extremist group behind the assaults.

The court proceedings in the case are ongoing and are expected to last through at least the spring of 2022.
