Several pro-human rights and pro-refugees activists assembled 48,000 German politicians’ portraits to form a giant collage lying in front of Bundestag in Berlin on Thursday, days before the federal elections, to raise awareness on human rights violations at the outer borders of the European Union.
Activists from pro-refugee organisation ‘Seebruecke’ wanted to attract attention to how migrants are treated at the borders and criticise Frontex and other border guarding policies.
“During the last month of election campaign, we noticed that the topic of migration is not discussed at all,” said Doreen, one of organisers.
The organisers’s goal is ‘to appeal to the future federal government that they must finally make human rights the basis of their policy.’

SOT, Doreen, Activist (German): “We are at a lawn in front of the Bundestag building in Berlin, and we have assembled a mosaic out of 48000 different pictures. These pictures show politicians of the German Bundestag who, with their actions and decisions, have consciously and actively contributed to violation of human rights at the outer borders of Europe and who actively promote isolation of Germany.”
SOT, Doreen, activist (German): “During the last month of election campaign we noticed that the topic of migration is not discussed at all, and also we noticed during the previous legislative period that the current federal government doesn’t pay attention to human rights and it’s not in focus of their policy. So our goal today is to attract attention to the European outer borders, to show who carries responsibility and to appeal to the future federal government that they must finally make human rights the basis of their policy.”
