The trial of 96-year-old Irmgard F. began at the Itzehoe Regional Court on Tuesday on its second attempt, as the accused former concentration camp worker had not appeared at the actual start of the trial on 30 September, following an escape attempt.

The prosecution plans to charge the accused with aiding and abetting those in control of the camp in the systematic killing of Jewish prisoners, Polish partisans, and Soviet Russian war prisoners. The indictment listed aiding murder in more than 11,000 cases and additionally included aiding and abetting attempted murder of prisoners in seven cases during her time of service between 1943 and 1945.

The accused was 18 to 19 years old at the time of the crime and was therefore considered an adolescent.

Stutthof was notorious for the completely inadequate care of the prisoners, deliberately created by the SS. Most of the prisoners died of disease and exhaustion and torture, and inhumane forced labour. In addition, there was a gas chamber and a camouflaged neck-shooting facility for targeted mass killings.

SOT, Activist (German): “We have come here because we are convinced that, even if very late, it is necessary to speak justice. Justice about crimes that are unique in history, that have reached such dimensions as were previously unthinkable in the history of humanity.”

SOT, Activist (German): “Those who have not learned their history could be condemned to have to relive that history. This experience is certain knowledge, which is also why we are standing here.”

SOT, Activist (German): “Stutthof, that was one of 45,000 murder sites in the German Reich. There were 45 thousand such places in the then German Reich. In Stutthof alone 65 thousand people were killed. The list of victims is long.”
