Farmer Hubertus Elmar from Marpingen-Urexweiler, Saarland won a European pumpkin weighing competition in the German city of Ludwigsburg on Sunday, with a gourd that weighed some 744 kilograms (1,640 pounds).
The giant pumpkins could be seen brought for the weigh-off on a scale before the awarding ceremony.
The 2020 Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival is organised in cooperation with the European Giant Vegetable Grower’s Association with a grand prize of €750 ($885) for the first place.
Despite winning the European trophy, Hubertus Elmar’s pumpkin did not beat the world record set in 2016 by Belgian farmer Mathias Willemijns, whose gourd weighed 1,190.5 kilogrammes (2,624 pounds).
Dozens of participants from more than 20 countries have been taking part in the annual giant pumpkin weigh-off at the Bluhendes Barock Ludwigsburg Palace since 2006.
