The German government expelled a Russian diplomat from the Russian Consulate in Munich on Friday after being declared a ‘persona non grata’ due to alleged involvement in espionage activities.

According to local reports, the diplomate was an undeclared intelligence officer of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) working at the consulate to retrieve information about European aerospace projects.

The diplomat, an Ausburg University researcher, identified as Ilnur N, was officially charged on Thursday by local authorities.

Germany has barred Russian diplomats in the past, with the most recent case connected to the 2019 assassination of a Chechen commander in Berlin.
