The trial against an alleged former Sachsenhausen concentration camp guard began on Thursday at the Neuruppin Regional Court.

Prosecutors accuse the 100-yr-old defendant of assisting in the murder of inmates during his time at the camp between 1942 to 1945.

The defendant could be seen being picked up and leaving the court, located in Brandenburg.

Court spokesperson Iris Le Claire said “The suspect faces charges of murder accomplice and this charge carries a sentence of between 3 and 15 years in prison.”

The Neuruppin public prosecutor’s office had been investigating for around a year and a half before bringing formal charges against the defendant. The trial is expected to last into January 2022.

It is estimated at least 100,000 died at Sachsenhausen from forced labour, cruel medical experiments, mistreatment and starvation.
