Minister President Reinard Haseloff Christian Democratic Union (CDU) addressed supporters in Magdeburg as the first polls of the Saxony Anhalt regional state’s parliament election showed a clear advantage for the CDU party, with 14 percentage points ahead of Alternative for Germany (AfD), on Sunday.

The projected result gives the CDU 36.6 percent of the votes in the lead, 22 percent for the AfD, 11 percent for the socialist Left (Die Linke), 8.4 percent for the Social Democrats (SPD), 6.5 percent for the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and 6 percent for the Greens.

Pre-election polling showed the CDU and AfD neck and neck in the first place. The surprising, yet clear victory for the CDU Sunday evening was welcomed by Angela Merkel’s party members.

Amidst COVID related corruption scandals and the rising popularity of the Greens, a win in Saxony-Anhalt could change the course for Germany’s national governing party.

The CDU hopes to have this momentum carry with them into the federal elections on September 26.
