Scuffles broke out between police and protesters railing against stricter COVID-19 restrictions in Leipzig on Monday, after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced new measures aimed at containing the Omicron strain of the coronavirus.

Demonstrators gathered in the city centre, with several participants seen linking to each other by holding on to red barricade tape. With counter-demonstrations expected, there was a large police presence to monitor the rally. Several scuffles broke out and one demonstrator was seen being led away by several officers.

Following an announcement from Scholz on Friday, Germany is set to implement stricter rules for its hospitality sector after central government talks with regional leaders. Under the new rules, only those who have had a booster vaccine dose will be able to have a sit-down meal at a restaurant without other requirements. People with two shots or those who have recovered from coronavirus must show a negative test, while the unvaccinated will not be able to dine at all.

The German hospitality industry association has criticised the move, saying it will have a potentially catastrophic effect on bars and restaurants. However, the government has said the measures will be necessary to counter the spread of Omicron.
