Germany: South Africa riots are 'cause for concern' - Foreign Ministry spox

The German Foreign Ministry has expressed concerns over outbreaks of violence and looting in South Africa, during a Federal press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

“The riots in South Africa give us cause for concern and we regret the serious outbreaks of violence and looting that we have observed in South Africa since last Friday,” said FM spokesperson Rainer Breul, calling on protesters to ‘refrain from violent clashes’.

During the conference, German Health Ministry spokesperson Hanno Kautz also slammed WHO’s warning against the mixing of COVID-19 vaccines.

“The vaccine mix of AstraZeneca plus the mRNA vaccine is at least as effective as heterologous vaccination, and that’s the benchmark for us,” said Kautz, citing the Standing Committee on Vaccination’s recommendation.

Unfortunately, those reports have not stopped this week either. Today we have taken note of the recent news of arrests, searches, harassment and numerous human rights violations in Belarus. We strongly condemn that, and the debates on sanctions are not over, as the Foreign Minister has repeatedly said. What happens next is in the hands of the Belarusian regime.”

SOT, Rainer Breul, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “We have diplomatic contacts with the [Afghan] government. The Taliban is not the government. You know that. As for the interview of the British Defence Minister, I can say that it’s a one-time interview statement. How it correlates with the British policy you should ask the British Government. In the international community we agree that we support the government, we support the President, I gave a long explanation on that on Friday, and this will not change after the troops’ withdrawal.”

SOT, Steve Alter, German Interior Ministry spokesperson (German): “The Afghan Government has asked several EU countries to temporarily suspend deportations, specifically for the period of three months. The request was also addressed to Germany and it’s currently being reviewed. There are consultations with the Afghan government, and our goal is to find a solution to the issue that is acceptable for both sides.”
