Members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) gathered for a post-election group photo in Berlin on Wednesday.
The photo opportunity took place as Rolf Muetzenich was re-elected as the head of the SPDs parliamentary group.
Following Sunday’s federal election, the centre-left SPD has won a total of 206 out of 735 seats in the Bundestag (German Parliament) and a 25.7 percent vote share, outperforming the conservative Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (24.1 percent).
Exploratory talks have begun as the various parties seek out potential coalition partners, with the FDP (Free Democratic Party) having held an initial positive meeting with the Green Party on Tuesday night.
During a press conference held on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the FDP confirmed that his party will be holding talks with the CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The Green Party also announced a follow-up meeting with the FDP on Wednesday.
Potential governing coalitions include the ‘Jamaica’ and the ‘traffic light’ coalitions. A ‘Jamaica’ coalition would be comprised of a Green Party, CDU/CSU and FDP governing majority, whereas the ‘traffic light’ coalition would be a Green Party, SPD and FDP majority.
The SPD’s chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz has expressed a desire to form a coalition government with the FDP and the Greens on Monday.
