Thousands of Ajax Amsterdam fans filled the streets of Dortmund and set off flares ahead of Wednesday’s Champion League match against BVB.
Crowds of fans could be seen marching through Dortmund’s city centre, while a police contingent of about 1,000, with a water cannon vehicle and horse units, escorted them.
According to police spokesman Oliver Peiler, it was mainly the Dutch fans who were involved in lighting ‘pyrotechnics.’ He added that the police did everything possible to successfully separate both fan groups.
SOT, Oliver Peiler, Spokesperson of Dortmund police (German): “First of all, we have an atmospheric and peaceful celebration in Dortmund city centre. There was also a fan meeting point on Hansaplatz. Up to three thousand Dutch fans used this at the peak. The whole thing threatened to tip over a bit, especially towards the end of this fan contact point, when pyrotechnics were set off on a massive scale. The police signalled several times through loudspeaker announcements to please refrain from doing so. In the end, we decided to videotape the whole thing as evidence.”
SOT, Oliver Peiler, Spokesperson of Dortmund police (German): ” Now, before the start of the match, I would actually assess the whole thing as predominantly peaceful. As I said - we had bottles thrown, we had pyrotechnics from the Dutch fans. As far as the Dortmund fans are concerned, I have to say that there was nothing at all to complain about, and no confrontations whatsoever. We hope that we can continue to maintain a separation between the Dutch and German fans, that we succeeded throughout the day with a lot of police forces and hope that it will remain peaceful beyond the end of the match.”
