Some two thousand participants marched in the 25th Hemp Parade for the legalisation of marijuana in Berlin on Saturday.
Participants held signs urging for the plant to be legalised, whilst passing famous Berlin landmarks such as the TV Tower, the Brandenburg Gate and the Bundestag.
“Cannabis is not a heavy drug as it was stated for many years, and even in medicine there are many things where it can help with treatment,” said protester Jens, stating that alcohol and cigarettes are ‘much more toxic’ than cannabis, despite being legal.
It was reported that some members of political parties running for parliament also joined the demonstration, including those from Die Linke, the Pirates and the Greens.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Silke, Protester (German): “I’m here today to demonstrate for legalisation, which is long overdue here in Germany. In the USA, in Canada it’s already legalised with good experience. And we don’t want people to be criminalised or disadvantaged, there are misconduct cases, fines and driving bans, all that is completely unnecessary.”
SOT, Jens, Protester, (German): “Cannabis is not a heavy drug as it was stated for many years, and even in medicine there are many things where it can help with treatment. And this belongs to people and can’t be regulated by the government. Alcohol is legal, cigarettes are legal, and they are much more toxic and dangerous than cannabis. Cannabis helps to relax and to relief pain, and that’s why I think it should be legal.”
SOT, Christoph, Protester (German): “Cannabis is a super useful plant, it produces much more paper than trees from the same field size. And it just should be legalised so that we can live freely. When people grow up only with alcohol and cigarettes, that’s shit.”
