The trial against an alleged former Sachsenhausen concentration camp guard, Josef S., continued on Thursday at the Neuruppin Regional Court, which for the purposes of the trial was relocated to Brandenburg an der Havel.
“The accused talked about his life from the period of time between 1941 to 1945. He stated that after his relocation from Lithuania, he allegedly started working in a company which produced replacement parts for the Wehrmacht,” stated court spokesperson Iris Le Claire.
“After that he worked in the agricultural and forestry sector and only towards the end of the Second World War he came to Kolberg at the front, working there as a civilian and not as a person in uniform. He insisted that he didn’t work in the concentration camp of Sachsenhausen,” added Le Claire
The defendant, who is currently 100-years old, is accused of assisting in the murder of thousands of people at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
“The defence is stagnating, it hasn’t processed in any direction since the first day and that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a success, even if I am seeing it from the perspective of the defence,” said defence lawyer Thomas Walter.
Earlier in November Josef S. was confronted by a 92-year-old Holocaust survivor during a hearing of the trial.
