Germany: World's biggest Xmas candle lit up in Schlitz as holiday season kicks off

What is thought to be the world’s largest non-wax candle were lit up in Schlitz on Wednesday, marking the start of the holiday season in the small Hessian town despite the closure of its Christmas markets for the second year due to the pandemic.
“Since 1991 the Rear Tower converts into the biggest candle in the world. It has 36 metres of height and on the tower is a flame of six metres with 140 candles installed. That means that we are reaching 42 metres height in total,” explained the Tourism Officer of Schlitz Oliver Rohde.
“This idea came up in 1991 when the retailers of Schlitz were looking for ideas on how to make the Christmas Market more famous,” he added.
The candle is placed in the vestige of a castle that no longer exists, but the tradition of lighting the candle during the Christmas season is still the pride of the locals.
The monument traditionally serves as the site of the city’s Christmas market, which will not open again this year.
“We usually have a very nice Christmas market here on Advent weekends, on Saturdays and Sundays, and the candle is the symbol of this Christmas market, people come from all over Germany here to drink mulled wine and taste regional specialities,” shared Rohde.

During that night, they came up the idea while drinking that they could cover the Rear Tower in a red cloth, and that has been done for 30 years now every year. In November the firefighters come and cover the tower in a red cloth. The handball players take care that the cloth in is good shape and mend it. And without the diligent work of volunteers this could not take place every year.”

SOT, Oliver Rohde, Tourism Officer of City of Schlitz (German): “Normally, we have here every Advent Weekend a very beautiful Christmas Market and the candle is sort of the emblem of this Christmas Market. And the people come over from all Germany to visit the market. They drink a mulled vine and taste the regional products. This is year due to the Coronavirus pandemic there will only be the candle. Next year we want to organise the Christmas Market again.”

SOT, Local dressed up as City Night Watch (German): “[Hello folks] and let me tell you, it is nice that you are here in Schiltz at the biggest candle of the world. Well, this started naturally a lot earlier. In the year 1400 this tower was built as a defensive tower, later on it was expanded. Under the ground they built a dungeon to protect the people. You may know it for the saying, people were locked. The bridge beside was the access and it was of importance, as if the enemy was inside the tower you could break the beams and the bridge collapsed and the counts were in safety.”

SOT, Local dressed up as City Night Watch (German): “Later on of course we had to watch for enemies and fire but 1991 that [inaudible] came up at night with 15 shots and 5 litres beer to the idea to cover the tower in red, so we have something special. In so we do since 1991 and we are listed in the Guiness Book of Records here in our beautiful little city of Schiltz with the biggest candle in the world from your watchman from Schlitz, Hagen.”

SOT, Armin Barbian, Local (German): “Behind me you can see the Rear Castle with the Rear Tower. That is the biggest candle in the world. The biggest illuminated candle in the world since 1991 with 36 metres of height and is listed in the Guiness Book of Records. The Rear Tower is covered with a cloth for Christmas, with a red cloth, that is done by the fire fighters of Schlitz. Then it gets a wreath of 6 metres with lights on top, and in that way the biggest candle in the world is standing here in Schlitz.”

SOT, Armin Barbian, Local (German): “For me personally it is a nice view. I live here and I can see it every night. It does bring some positivity in these hard times to have some Christmas flair and this nice illumination, it brings joy to the hearts.”
