Germany: Zapastistas hold boat demo and march against "capitalist colonialism" in Berlin

Members and supporters of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (ELZN) held a boat demo against ‘capitalist colonialism’ in Berlin, on Friday.

Among other topics, the protesters intended to draw attention to the participation of German train railway company Deutsche Bahn in the construction of contested intercity railway project ‘Tren Maya’ in Mexico.

The EZLN is a Mexican anti-colonial movement that has been active since 1994 and control a large amount of territory of the south-western state of Chiapas, fighting for indigenous autonomy and equality.

Today, the Chiapas conflict is considered a frozen conflict.

SOT, Llanquiray, Mapuche protester (Spanish): “All indigenous people (are) fighting territorial dispossession, against transnational corporations which can come to our territory in the name of ‘development’ and are polluting without consulting us. That’s why, I am taking advance that the ‘Gira Zapatista’ is taking place in order to also visualise the struggle of the Mapuche for territorial defence.”

SOT, Llanquiray, Mapuche protester (Spanish): “Of course, we need alliances, but we need that the European society take responsibility because everything we can see here is based on colonialism, on territorial dispossession. We are here in front of Humboldt Forum where there are many objects stolen from our cultures during (the times of) colonialism and this has turned into a business, since you need to pay to enter. All this richness you find in Europe is based on suffering and territorial dispossession. That is what, we, indigenous people living in Europe, are trying to make visible.”
