Barber Toshimi Suzuki has been building huge concrete statues inspired by the famous Japanese anime Gundam at his barbershop in Aomori. Suzuki was filmed and interviewed beside the statues on Monday.
Suzuki, a life long creator and inventor of many interesting elements has been making Gundam statues since a client suggested it 17 years ago.
“I’m thinking that I can still make things, but after all, I can’t help it if I can’t walk anymore. My legs and feet are getting weaker, so yeah. I still want to create, but I may not be able to do it for a long time,” explained Suzuki.
The barber is 77-years-old and shows no signs of stopping working on either his statues or his hair salon clients.

SOT, Toshimi Suzuki, Barber (Japanese): “I started making Gundam when I was just 60 years old. I’ve been making them for 17 years now.”

SOT, Toshimi Suzuki, Barber (Japanese): “I’ve been interested in making things since I was a little boy, well, things like masks, model airplanes, and other things like that.

SOT, Toshimi Suzuki, Barber (Japanese): “One time, a customer at my barbershop, a high school student, said to me, ‘Why don’t you make Gundam?’ So I said, ‘What’s Gundam?”

SOT, Toshimi Suzuki, Barber (Japanese): “Am I going to make this? It looks a little difficult. But I wanted to try. So what should I make it with? At first. I thought, Since it’s going to be outside, it has to be made of concrete, otherwise it won’t last.”

SOT, Toshimi Suzuki, Barber (Japanese): “From the moment I set the finished legs in this place, fans started coming to me, saying: ‘This is Gundam!’ ‘Wow! Gundam’. Every time I build things, people come by to enjoy them.”

SOT, Toshimi Suzuki, Barber (Japanese): “I’m 77-years-old now, so I’m thinking that I can still make things, but after all, I can’t help it if I can’t walk anymore.
