Greece: Nation mourns death of singer, politician and dissident Mikis Theodorakis

The flag at the Acropolis in Athens flew at half-mast on Thursday following the death of legendary musician, politician and political dissident Mikis Theodorakis.
“No one can say enough for a man like that, who honored culture, humanity, music, poetry. No one voiced Greece’s heart like he did. We will miss him but he will always be with us,” doctor Dina Politi said.
His friend Henning Zierock said, “Mikis does not belong only to Greeks, now he belongs to the world and we have met him and seen him and we give it to the next generation.”
Theodorakis is possibly most known outside of Greece for his song ‘Zorba the Greek’ as well as his political activities during Greece’s military dictatorship.
Theodorakis, an avid Marxist his entire life, was imprisoned during the US backed military junta from 1967 to 1974 for his communist ties outspoken voice against the junta.
Theodorakis was a member of Greek Parliament from 1981 to 1993 with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and later New Democracy party (1989-1993).
The Greek flag was lowered to half-staff at the Acropolis, and three days of national mourning have been declared. His death was reportedly caused by cardiopulmonary arrest.
