Greece: Parthenon fragment on loan from Italy raises hopes of recovering marbles from British Museum

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greek Culture Minister Lina Medoni, and the Director of the Acropolis Museum, Nicos Stampolidis, officially presented a fragment of the Parthenon named the ‘Fagan fragment’ on loan from the Antonio Salinas Museum of Palermo, Italy, on Monday. The fragment will be exhibited at the Acropolis Museum for the next four years, with the possibility to extend it further.
“[This] paves the way for the British Museum to enter into serious discussions with the Greek authorities in order to find a solution that would be mutually acceptable”, said Mitsotakis during the presentation. He added, that he had raised “the issue when I visited [the UK], I felt encouraged by [Johnson’s] statement that the British government would not oppose a possible agreement that could be reached between [Greece] and the British Museum.”
The ‘Elgin Marbles’ which constitute the eastern frieze of the Parthenon were taken in the 19th century by the British diplomat Lord Elgin, and were stored at the British Museum, where they still are shown. Athens is keen on recovering those fragments it considers its cultural heritage. This latest development gives hope to the Greek authorities that this transfer could be happening “sooner or later”, said Mitsotakis.
