Greece: PM Mitsotakis booed as thousands come to bid farewell to late composer Theodorakis

Thousands attended a farewell ceremony that celebrated the life of late Greek composer and political icon, Mikis Theodorakis, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also attended the farewell service whereby he was booed on arrival. Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was also present. “Mikis (Theodorakis) is a synonym of the country’s history, the dreams, the struggles, the victories’ and defeats’, its triumphs’ and victories’. He is a synonym of our people’s struggles,” declared Tsipras to the press.
Theodorakis is possibly most known outside of Greece for his song ‘Zorba the Greek’ as well as his political activities during Greece’s military dictatorship.
An avid Marxist, the composer was imprisoned during the US-backed military junta from 1967 to 1974 for his outspoken voice.
Theodorakis was a member of the Greek Parliament from 1981 to 1993 with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and later New Democracy party (1989-1993).
