Greece: Pope Francis greets supporters at Lesbos migrant camp

Pope Francis greeted tens of supporters during his visit to the Mavrovouni centre migrant camp in Mytilene, Lesbos, on Sunday.

The pope’s supporters, among whom were many children gathered along the railing, cheering and greeting Pope Francis as he stepped past.

Pope Francis could be seen reaching out to touch his followers, greeting them on his way to the press event.

“It is our duty, with respect for international and fundamental law, not to allow the inhumane instrumentalisation of immigrants and refugees,” said President Katerina Sakellaropoulou who was also in attendance.

Nearly 2,200 asylum seekers currently reside at the camp, which was founded after the former migrant camp of Moria burned down the year prior.

Pope Francis is the second Catholic leader to visit Greece in the last twenty years. His trip to the region is an attempt to foster further collaboration between the Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches.
