Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis was buried in his hometown of Galatas, on Thursday, after he died on September 2 at the age of 96.
Dozens of people paid their respect at the funeral on the island of Crete, including Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and his daughter Margarita Theodorakis.
The coffin was displayed until midday at the Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin in the city of Chania for the public to pay their respect to the deceased and afterwards taken to Agios Nikolaos Church at the Galata village cemetery for the funeral service. Thousands of mourners filled the streets of Chania to bid farewell to the composer.
Theodorakis was not only a celebrated musician and writer, but also known internationally as a political activist and dissident. Considered a national hero, the Greek government proclaimed a three-day nationwide mourning and lowered the national flag on the Acropolis to half mast.
