Eight years after the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas (Killah P) by the far-right ultranationalist Golden Dawn party, his mother and hundreds of his supporters marched through the streets of Piraeus on Saturday.
Demonstrators first gathered in Pavlos Fyssas Street and laid flowers at his monument erected at the site of his murder, before marching on with placards and portraits. During the night, demonstrators set off fireworks at security forces, causing property damage with no major incidents reported.
Last year in October, after a trial that lasted more than five years, the far-right Golden Dawn members were found guilty of orchestrating the murder of anti-fascist activist and rapper Pavlos Fyssas in 2013, as well as several other attempted murders, and organising multiple attacks.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Local: “It’s also one year after they (Golden Dawn) were convicted as a criminal organisation. Most of their leadership is in prison, so the antifascist victory is real.”
SOT, Local: “Today the governments of Greece and also Europe, they are up again with their racist policy, they are closing the borders, they are building fences. And this is all paving the way for the far right and the fascists. We have to stop them again.”
SOT, Orestis, Student (Greek): “We will always be here, until there is no more space for Golden Dawn or any fascist organisation spreading hatred and undermining workers rights.”
