Alotenango emergency response workers and residents were on high alert as the Fuego volcano continued to erupt on Friday.
“At 05:30 (11:30 GMT) in the morning a cycle of increased activity began and pyroclastic flows were already present,” a Departmental delegate for Civil Protection of Sacatepequez, Daniel Garcia said.
Emergency workers were on standby ready to evacuate, Garcia added.
“A process of notifications to the population is started and operational activities are started to position humanitarian assistance. and resources needed for the possibility of setting up shelters, all of this as prevention,” he concluded.
According to the National Institute of Seismology and Volcanology, the new eruptive phase was the strongest recorded in the country since the disaster of June 2018. The Fuego volcano is 3,763 metres (12,345 feet) high and located 35 km (21 miles) southwest of the capital Guatemala City.

Monitoring was carried out throughout the night and at dawn and at 05:30 in the morning a cycle of increased activity began and pyroclastic flows were already present.”
