Conakry residents reacted with mixed emotions to the military coup which ousted now former President Alpha Conde.
“You have to be very careful. We must not accept to go back to the previous situation. First of all, it should be remembered that all this happened because the President of the Republic had one mandate too many. We could have avoided all this, but unfortunately around him there were people who led down this path,” resident Mamady Senkou Camara explained.
“I do not agree with the junta. Everyone knows that when a military regime takes power, it is to break the economy and other things,” another resident, Mamoudou Boua Kaba, commented.
On Sunday, military coup leader Mamadi Doumbouya announced the arrest of former president Alpha Conde on state television, following reports of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace.
The army later imposed a national curfew until further notice, with Doumbouya leading the country as the head of the National Committee for Unification and Development. Doumbouya has said a new government will be formed within weeks.
