Les Cayes residents have set up a makeshift tent camp in a football stadium in the wake of Saturday’s deadly earthquake.

Locals could be seen living at the camp on Wednesday.

Medical staff attended to injured people at the port’s Immaculate Conception Hospital.

Workers using heavy machinery were also continuing the search for survivors and victims of the quake.

A doctor from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that “the first hours the situation was really painful because we were not ready for such an event.”

She added that shortages of medical supplies were an issue.

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Saturday resulted in at least 1,900 deaths, with several still missing and more than 5,700 injured. Efforts to rescue residents have been hindered by tropical storm Grace which hit on Tuesday.
