Your TV might sound fine for watching a game show or the news, but if you want clear dialogue and more explosive sound for TV and movies, an external speaker solution might be right for you. We're going to talk about sound bars, sound bases, powered speakers, and home theaters in a box. A sound bar is the most common type of TV speaker; they can stand alone, or come with a subwoofer for enhanced bass. For surround sound, sound bars might come with satellites speakers. Sound bars are meant to be easy to connect and install, and they look great on your entertainment stand or mounted on the wall. Simple bars, like an Amazon Basics sound bar, offers great two-channel sound for under $100, or you could spend over $1000 for a Dolby Atmos surround sound bar from Samsung. A sound base, is a platform style speaker, meant to fit beneath the TV, or act as the TV stand. Since there's more room in the cabinet, they can provide a good amount of bass on their own, but adding a subwoofer will give more of a theater like rumble. Because sound bases tend to be narrower, they offer less stereo separation than many sound bars, but most will do a good job of filling your room with sound and making dialogue easier to understand. Often called computer speakers, or multimedia speakers, self powered speakers usually require a little more wiring, but can range from two speaker solutions, to full-on surround sound systems. Generally, you get what you pay for in this category, and the bigger the speaker, the bigger the sound. Home theater systems are usually comprised of a set of speakers and a separate compact amplifier. These systems, sometimes called home theater in a box, offer big sound at an affordable price, just be sure to buy the cables and wires you'll need if they aren't included. Just make sure to take a little more time with installation.
