A brawl erupted in the Honduran Congress chambers at new provisional Congress president Jorge Calix swearing-in, in Tegucigalpa on Friday.

As Calix was being sworn some lawmakers from the same party climbed onto the podium which led to scuffles, with people shouting ‘traitors.’

Calix, the protesting members and President-elect Xiomara Castro are all from the same party, the Liberty and Refoundation Party or Libre. Castro was elected on November 28 last year and will be Honduras’ first female president when sworn in.

Calix’s swearing in in turn comes after 22 Libre lawmakers opposed Castro’s move to install a member of an allied centrist party as congressional speaker.
