A new wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong has sparked a jolt of panic buying, causing the emptying of supermarket shelves, as seen on Monday.

Supermarkets shelves were spotted devoid of instant noodles and bread. The vegetable supply has declined, causing some produce to double in price.

On February 14, the city of Hong Kong reported 2,071 new infections, which authorities dubbed the ‘fifth wave.’

According to the John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre, the financial city has recorded over 20,000 cases and a little over 200 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
