How this woman responded to her recently adopted dog going blind

When I saw Blaze’s adoption profile online, I knew he was the dog for me. I’d been looking for a dog for a while with little success. But when his picture came up, I knew he was the one. And we didn’t even know about the teeth before he came home. That was a glorious surprise. We were told Blaze was a German Shepherd and Greyhound mix. And that although his eyes were sunk in, he didn’t appear to have vision issues. Our vet took a look and wanted another opinion. So they referred us to a veterinary ophthalmologist.

At that appointment, we found out he was blind in his right eye and would need surgery to save any vision he had in his left. About two weeks post-surgery, I was on a walk with Blaze and he just started to walk into everything. I rushed him back to the ophthalmologist only to find surgery was not successful. And Blaze was now also blind in his left eye. While we’ve seen losing his vision changes behavior a little bit, he’s otherwise dealt with the change with so much grace.

He navigates the world with little issue. We had his right eye surgically removed a few months ago due to repeated infections. And I think I was more put off by the change than he was. It has taken us a very long time to get him healthy. When we adopted him, he was about 50 pounds and he’s 80 pounds now. Now that he’s healthy, we can finally focus on behavior. We’re working very closely with a trainer to help Blaze feel a little less apprehensive about the world. A lot of it is just communicating with him. Blaze can’t see what’s coming, so we tell him.

The training process is challenging but rewarding. Obviously, we didn’t anticipate the number of challenges we would face after we adopted Blaze. But given the chance to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. He’s my very best friend. And I count my lucky stars every single day for him. To see the joy this goofy boy brings others is such a treasure.
