Tens of thousands of people, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, attended Pope Francis’ Mass on the closing day of the International Eucharist Congress in Budapest on Sunday.
The ceremony was the Pope’s first big international outdoor event since undergoing surgery last July. It was also the first time in 21 years since a pope had attended the closing day of the International Eucharist Congress (IEC) in person.
Earlier, the pontiff held a ‘cordial meeting’ with the Prime Minister, and urged the country to ‘extend its arms towards everyone’ in addressing the anti-migrant policies Orban’s government had passed.
Pope Francis spent seven hours in total in Hungary before travelling to neighbouring Slovakia for three days. The IEC will be held again in 2024 in Ecuador.

SOT, Pope Francis (Italian): “Today too, the Lord looks at each of us personally and asks, ‘who am I, truly, to you? Who am I to you?’ This question, addressed to each of us, calls for more than a quick answer straight out of the catechism, but it requires a vital, personal response.”
SOT, Pope Francis (Italian): “The difference is not between who is religious, and who isn’t. The crucial difference is between the true God and the god of our ego. How far removed is He who reigns in silence on the cross from the false god we would like to reign by force and silence our enemies.”
