Italian athlete skater Arianna Fontana said she still had the shivers at the Beijing Winter Games on Tuesday, after winning a record-extending tenth Olympic medal in short track speed skating.
Speaking after Monday’s 500m title race, Fontana explained that her accolade was “definitely a race to the top,” after coming from behind in Monday’s race to beat Olympic record holder Suzanne Schulting (Silver) and world-record holder Kim Boutin (Gold).
“I raced well, I had a good feeling,” she Fontana: “Overpassing Kim Boutin on the outside gave me the right push, so in the final, I said: ‘we play for everything here’... when I crossed the finish line it was an explosion of emotions.”
Fontana is now the Olympics’ most decorated short-track racer and Italy’s tied most decorated Olympian, boasting two more medals than the most highly decorated Olympians Russia’s Viktor Ahn and America’s Apolo Ohno.
“I still have the shivers when I look at these images,” said the athlete. “I couldn’t hold myself back and I had to explode, it was really something incredible,” she added.
