Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he “likes the fans he has” and will not apologise for asking more people to attend his side next match, speaking in a press conference in Manchester on Friday.

“It’s not the first time I’ve said something like that in my career,” Guardiola said, responding to the criticism voiced by the general secretary of the Manchester City Supporters’ Club.

“We are who we are. We are proud of who we are. I know the history. I learned the history of this club when was in lower divisions, what it means to travel and follow this team, I respect it a lot. I don’t want to be like [Manchester] United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, like [Real] Madrid, all the big clubs, we are who we are, with good things and bad things like all the clubs.” the manager told the press.

Guardiola said after his Champion’s League game on Wednesday that he hoped more fans attend their match with Southampton on Saturday than the 38,062 people who travelled to the Etihad Stadium to watch the win against Leipzig.
