The decade’s most “hectic” summer monsoon season turned deadly this week as heavy lightning and thunderstorms flooded parts of southern Nevada, and a leaky ceiling forced board games to stop at a Las Vegas Strip casino. In about two hours, up to 3 centimeters of rain fell on the city - almost half the rainfall for the year in the area affected by the drought. Winds in the Las Vegas valley reached 71 miles per hour, nearly the speed of a Category 1 hurricane.

Public works crews and firefighters found the man’s body while removing debris from a flood channel near the Las Vegas Boulevard resort area. The man died around midnight, Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Billy Samuels said. The Clark County Coroner did not immediately release the identity or cause of death.

Water also flowed through a parking lot flood channel near the Linq Hotel and the High Roller, and social media posts showed water seeping from the ceiling onto the gaming tables at the Planet Hollywood resort.

Around 7,600 people were left without power after the storm. According to Nevada Energy’s outage map, many of the outages were fixed, resulting in approximately 150 customers being affected.
The Las Vegas weather service warned of wind gusts approaching 70 mph and urged Twitter followers to “take shelter now!” The Las Vegas Fire Department said on Twitter that it had responded to 330 calls for help, mostly weather-related, and rescued seven people in rough water.
