India: 31 dead in Mumbai landslides caused by heavy rainfall

Emergency response services attended landslide incident sites in Mumbai on Sunday, following a night of heavy rainfall during which retaining walls collapsed.

The landslides took place in Mumbai’s suburbs of Chembur and Vikhroli, with a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) spokesperson having announced that rescue operations were concluded on Sunday evening.

A total of 31 people have died in the two landslides, with two people injured and all missing persons accounted for, according to the NDRF spokesperson.

“Water and mud came together under pressure and a two-story house collapsed and trapped the whole family in the rubble. The neighbors were also killed,” said a local Pod.

In a tweet, India’s Prime Minister Modi announced on Sunday that the next-of-kin of victims who have lost their lives in the landslides would be entitled to a payment of Rs 2 lakh (€2,270 or $2,680).

Injured victims will be entitled to Rs. 50,000 (€567, $670), with the funds coming from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

“All the people here are working-class and especially during this lockdown, people don’t have food to eat. Now people lost their homes and have nothing, we don’t know what will happen next,” commented Anu, a concerned resident.

According to a weather forecast report issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, “moderate to heavy” rainfall is expected in the area over the next day, with a possibility of “very heavy to extremely heavy” rainfall in “isolated places”.

SOT, Balu Pod, Resident (Hindi): “Last night, there was heavy rain. It was 12 or 12:30 and here there are two to three two-story houses, as you can see. From uphill, water and mud came together under pressure and the two-story house collapsed and trapped the whole family in the rubble. The neighbors were also killed.”

SOT, Balu Pod, Resident (Hindi): “Here, around 4 to 5 people have already been brought out and 4 people are still inside, that’s what we got to know from the rescue team. And above this hill, one government wall has also collapsed and few people died. And also on the other side, one break wall collapsed and some people died over there as well. An overall total of 15 people died in all these locations.”

SOT, Anu, Resident (Hindi): “All the residents here are daily wage labourers like vehicle drivers, potters, domestic workers. The most important thing is this time the authorities made a mistake. Every year they used to come and do the inspection, give notice and survey every house. Earlier, they’d do a meeting at the police station as well. This year we did not get any response, if they would have done their job maybe these people would not have died. And all the people here are working-class and especially during this lockdown, people don’t have food to eat. Now people lost their homes and have nothing, we don’t know what will happen next.”
