Chief Minister of Dehli Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the first ‘Smog tower’ on Monday on the site of the Connaught Place in New Dehli. This tower is designed to perform as an air purifier for the city.
“A tower of this size perhaps this is the first one. There are small towers in other places there. Even in Delhi, there are small towers. But a tower of this perhaps its the first. As I said this is on an experimental basis. If it is successful, then over the coming years Delhi will be a much cleaner, less polluted city,” explained Flakt Group director Malay Bandyopadhyay.
This project seeks to enhance the air quality locally and is being financed by the TATA Group. Dehli’s chief minister ceremonially ignited the turbines at the Connaught Palace in the presence of high authorities and personnel of the company responsible for its operation.
“The country’s first smog tower is being installed in Delhi today to clean its air and to fight pollution. This in itself is a new kind of technology. To date, no such tower is installed like this in any part of India, and no attempts were made to clear the air,” declared Kejriwal.
A two-year pilot study will be undertaken to ascertain the effectiveness of the smog tower after it becomes operational. Another 25-metre-tall smog tower, built by the Central government at Anand Vihar, is expected to be operational by August 31.

SOT, Malay Bandyopadhyay, Director of Flakt Group: “This is a smog tower, as you know it controls smoke and fog, both, in Delhi to control the environment. This is basically done by TATA projects. It’s a complete project. As Flakt group, we supplied the complete fans which will help draw the dirty air from the top and push it outside through a bank of filters. With this we expect the pollution level to come down to a radius of one kilometre around this tower.”

SOT, Arvind Kejriwal, Chief minister of Delhi (Hindi): “The country’s first smog tower is being installed in Delhi today to clean its air and to fight pollution. This in itself is a new kind of technology. To date, no such tower is installed like this in any part of India, and no attempts were made to clear the air. We have imported this technology from America.”

SOT, Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi (Hindi): “This is a 24 metre tower and from the top the air is sucked from a distance of one kilometre radius and then it’s cleaned and the fan that comes down from below will release the clean air.”
