India: Holy cow dung! Villagers throw dung during 'Gore Habba' festival

Villagers threw cow faeces on each other and smeared it on themselves during a day-long festival called ‘Gore Habba’ in the village of Gumatapura, as seen on footage from Sunday.

The villagers believe that the clothes and remains of a saint were dumped in a pit in the village, and took shape of a ‘Linga,’ which got surrounded by cow excrement.

Faeces is said to have been highly revered by the local deity Kare Eshwaraswamy, according to the villagers, who collected it and dumped it behind the temple.

“There is a belief in our village that the deity was born in this dung, so for generations, we are celebrating this festival three days after Diwali,” stated participant Ravi.

The ritual of throwing cow poop on one another during Diwali has existed in this village for centuries and has become an entertainment event attracting people from nearby Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

This dung has medicinal benefits, if you take it in small quantities every day even you will not be affected by cancer.”

SOT, Suresh, Local villager (Tamil): “People used to say it smells bad, but we don’t feel anything and it doesn’t smell at all. It will energise our bodies. Everyone from our village attends this event every year even if they are working or living in any part of the world. In recent years many visitors from abroad are coming here to see this festival. we are celebrating this festival for the last 200 years and the celebrations are expected to continue for centuries or even 500 years.”
