India: People celebrate as country reaches 1 billion COVID vaccinations milestone

Several officials, including Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of State for Health Bharti Parveen Pawar, attended a ceremony to celebrate the administration of 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine at the Red Fort in New Delhi on Thursday.
A crowd of people was also seen celebrating at the event.
“It’s a great achievement when compared with other countries, India achieved a great target. One hundred crores (one billion) is a great target. It’s really great,” said Akhil Xavier, a local businessman.
Earlier in the morning, India officially declared the vaccination target reached as part of the nationwide immunisation campaign launched in January by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The country, however, has still has a long way to vaccinate its population fully. Only 30 percent of India’s 900 million vaccine-eligible people have received two doses.
