India: Weekend curfew imposed in Delhi to curb rising infections

A weekend curfew impose by authorities in New Delhi on Saturday has resulted in empty streets and tighter restrictions to curb a rise in COVID-19 cases.

Only essential movement for food, groceries and medicine is allowed as most other shops are closed and streets remain lifeless. Police and army officials were also on the streets to ensure the rules were being followed.

SOT, Sonu, Street Seller (Hindi): “In Delhi Saturday and Sunday is the day where the sales happen four times higher than the normal day and we get more money. Saturday and Sunday are the days people get holiday and they do their shopping. There is a great need at this time. But it’s closed now, so this order should be changed.”

SOT, Karan Choudhary, Shop Owner (Hindi): “Even from the previous lockdown we are still not recovered and the business is very slow. If interruption comes like this often, how the business will survive? There are many who are appealing to impose lockdown in Delhi, if lockdown is imposed then how we will eat and what we will earn? We don’t have any other source of income, we are working and earning in this market.”
