A social worker from Mumbai became a local superhero with his mission to help disadvantaged children stay safe during the COVID pandemic. Dressed as a clown, Ashok Kurmi visits the city’s poorest districts to teach the safety rules to boys and girls in a playful fashion, as seen in footage filmed on Tuesday.
“When coronavirus started in 2020 around March 23 or 24, the atmosphere of fear started setting in the minds of people throughout the country and in Mumbai. Especially among the children who live on the streets on footpaths and under bridges there was confusion as to what is the coronavirus,” explained Kurmi.
A 37-year-old former employee of a pharmaceutical company, Kurmi dedicated himself to social work, and he spends nearly one-third of his monthly salary on his initiative, offering free masks and sanitation equipment after his entertaining lecture.
“Wherever I go with these coronavirus awareness materials, I explain how to avoid the virus, how you do not contract the virus, and how to protect yourself,” said Kurmi.
SOT, Ashok Kurmi, Entertainer (Hindi): “When coronavirus started in 2020 around March 23 or 24, the atmosphere of fear started setting in the minds of people throughout the country and in Mumbai. Especially among the children who live on the streets on footpaths and under bridges there was confusion as to what is the coronavirus. How can we get it? How not to contract it?”
SOT, Ashok Kurmi, Entertainer (Hindi): “These children who live on the streets and their parents were very scared. I wanted to change the atmosphere and created this joker image so that these children would listen and get rid of their fears, and protect themselves from coronavirus.”
SOT, Ashok Kurmi, Entertainer (Hindi): “Wherever I go with these coronavirus awareness materials, I explain how to avoid the virus, how you do not contract the virus, and how to protect yourself. The mood of the children is they are joyous and attentive on seeing their favourite joker coming with the message of the virus that is spreading in the country and in Mumbai.”
SOT, Ashok Kurmi, Entertainer (Hindi): “The first wave is over and the second wave is almost over. The third wave is expected and would especially affect children. I go amongst these children and their parents and distribute pamphlets that have the three simple rules of the government. Which is, one to wear a mask. Two is to sanitise your hands and three is to keep a three-metre distance from others. I go around Mumbai with this message to wear the mask properly and cover your nose and mouth. When you cough or sneeze to turn your face so that it does spread to another person next to you. My message is especially for the people who do not follow the rules or think coronavirus is not a sickness at all.”
